Drifters is one of those hidden gem anime series that never got a proper ending. Even many years after its release, fans are still hoping for a sequel. But what are the chances for Drifters Season 2?
From the creator and team behind Hellsing comes Drifters, another anime that blends history and fantasy. Toyohisa Shimazu, a commander of the Shimazu clan, flees into the mountains amidst the legendary Battle of Sekigahara. There, he finds himself in a mysterious room before eventually landing in a new world.
In this world, dangerous fantasy creatures also inhabit the lives of humans. Together with Nobunaga Oda, Yoichi Nasu, and other heroes who have arrived in this world from various eras, Toyohisa, as a samurai, throws himself into epic battles. The end of the first season made it clear that the anime must continue. But can we still expect Drifters Season 2? Here’s everything we know so far.
What We Know About Drifters Season 2
Drifters Season 2 was actually confirmed a long time ago. At the end of the final episode of the first season, the creators announced that the anime would continue. However, almost a decade has passed since then, and many fans no longer believe the story will continue.
Although three OVAs were released between 2017 and 2018 following the twelve-episode first season, the anime has been quiet ever since. And there are reasons for that.
Why Drifters Didn’t Continue
The producers may have announced the second season of Drifters somewhat prematurely. Not only did the manga offer barely enough source material for another season, but the animation studio Hoods Entertainment (known as Hoods Drifters Studio back then) was also struggling with financial difficulties.
Drifters Season 2 was impossible to implement at that time. Despite strong fan interest and above-average positive reviews, the project has since been put on hold.
Is There Still Hope For Season 2?
Admittedly, the chances for Drifters Season 2 are pretty slim. While the series still enjoys a loyal fan base, a continuation is highly unlikely for the reasons mentioned above and the fact that the Season 1 finale aired over a decade ago.
However, we must also mention that the anime was never officially canceled. Officially, the project is still in limbo. Furthermore, Kouta Hirano’s manga series has been expanded with several new volumes in recent years, providing enough content for Drifters Season 2.
So there’s still a glimmer of hope that the anime will soon continue with new episodes. This was also the case with Bleach, Black Butler, The Devil is a Part-Timer!, and Dragon Ball, for example.

What Fans Can Do Now
Our honest advice to all fans is not to get your hopes up too high for a comeback of the anime series. While the chances aren’t zero, they’re extremely slim.
It makes much more sense to read the original manga. Written by Kouta Hirano, it currently consists of seven volumes. It serves as the basis for the anime, and season 1 ends around chapter 45, which is included in the fifth volume. The series is entirely available in English.
